Someone organised to do some mangrove planting at the Naniki causeway, during the first week. We were really busy and ended up being late, so missed the mass plantings, but went down and had a look and a chat anyway.
There are a lot of new mangroves that have been planted around South Tarawa in the last few years, to try and help with erosion and protection from sea level rises. They are REALLY easy to spot, though it is really tough to work out how long they have been there for, as they grow really slowly. I think it may be because at this age, they are still below the high tide mark.
